Bill of Rights and NeoCons and NeoLibs and Warfare State30 Sep 2007 10:30 pm

Americans experienced a win and a loss last week in the Bush Administration’s ongoing war against our Constitution; not to mention our very way of life. The win came in the form of a U.S. District Court ruling by Judge Ann Aiken striking down parts of the USA Patriot Act that were grossly in violation of the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition against unreasonable search and seizure. The loss came in the form of the passage of the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment by the US Senate.

I’m going to take the optimistic view that both of these events are indicative of a sea change that I believe is taking place in America. This is because the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment was effectively watered down in order to achieve passage. More and more people are now wise to the lies, propaganda, and fear-mongering of the Bush Administration so it is becoming much easier to oppose it and much harder to support it. That’s my trend and I’m sticking to it.

Well, I found a theme that I like better than the previous one. It’s clean and simple and mostly what I want the site to look like. I just need to modify the menus a bit and I’ll pretty much be set. I hope readers will find it to their liking as well.

Thanks to co-”worker” for suggesting that my content be both insightful AND humorous. It can be hard to do both simultaneously, but the goal is laudable and I will try to achieve both qualities the best I can. My intent is for this to be a place for me to post my thoughts on what I consider to be the important issues of the day. I’ll trust my smartass streak to help lighten things up. Besides, there’s no way that I won’t be posting things I find just plain funny anyway.

Just a note of warning that the appearance of this blog is very likely to change; although I can’t say just when. Being new to this blog thing and the WordPress software in particular, I hastily chose a theme (the look or “skin” of this blog) that I found acceptable. Unfortunately, “acceptable” and optimal are miles apart in this case. So, I may adopt another “off-the-shelf” theme or modify one that I find closer to optimal.

I may do this tomorrow, or I may do it next year. Just be aware so you won’t be surprised and think you’re in the wrong place should you come back for another visit. The content (that is, my ramblings) will still be the same, but it will be clothed a bit differently.

Actually, WordPress has literally hundreds of different off-the-shelf themes that a budding blogger can use to dress their prose in. They range from colorful to dull to quite nice; depending upon your needs and taste. In case you are interested you can check out the WordPress Theme Viewer to get an idea of what is available.
